From Delaware Township to Modern Suburb

Originally inhabited by Lenni-Lenape Native Americans, the area that is now Cherry Hill was settled by European farmers in the late 17th century. Founded as Delaware Township in 1844, the community remained primarily agricultural until the mid-20th century. In 1961, the township was renamed Cherry Hill, taking its name from the Cherry Hill Farm that once stood where the Cherry Hill Mall was built. Following World War II, Cherry Hill experienced rapid suburban development, transforming from farmland to a thriving community with a current population of approximately 71,000 residents.
