Originally inhabited by the Lenni Lenape Native Americans, the area that is now Pennsauken was settled by European farmers in the late 17th century. The name "Pennsauken" is believed to derive from the Lenape language term "Pindasenauken," meaning "tobacco pouch." Pennsauken Township was officially incorporated on February 18, 1892, from portions of the now-defunct Stockton Township. The community has evolved from primarily agricultural land to a suburban community with commercial and industrial areas. Notably, Pennsauken was home to America's first drive-in movie theater, which opened in 1933\. Today, with a population of approximately 37,000 residents, Pennsauken continues to develop while honoring its diverse heritage.
